Is there a better alternative to make a call to the US than Magicjack?

I'm aware of the fact that one can make calls for Rs 2/min via Ncell (I believe) or skype/viber etc. But in the event one required to make longer phone calls (banks, insurance companies etc), what'd be a better option?

I bought NetTalk Duo ii, set up with highend internet powered by inverter. Call and recevive as regular phone. Any unreceived call are forwared to email if set up that way.
If it is going to be used by parents: perfect.

cardinal, im not happy with the sound quality. i liked it but still wanted to know if there were better opportunities. thats all.

My relative keep changing their number in 4-5 months.
I am guessing it is the same google phone they are using.

I suppose that works, Fuel Tank. I just didn't wish to take any chances as making phonecalls on professional capacity is one of the primary reasons.

By the way, if I were to temporarily suspend my cell phone in the US, can I still get the calls forwarded to google voice number?

With adequate internet speed, you can make calls from GV through your browser. Also you can receive calls on your GV account and can forward calls to another number. GV works as a central numbers that you can give out to anyone and then you can forward your calls to your other numbers; keeping your cell phone and other numbers private and unknown to people when you do not want everyone to know your personal numbers. Also, you can make calls through your cell phone using GV app but that will use your minutes/balance but it will show your GV number on the receiver's end. This idea will not work for your particular situation from Nepal.

You can download third party apps but the quality is really questionable through these apps. I used couple of apps like Talkatone but had to give up dues to the call quality. there are premium apps that you can purchase but I do not have any experience with those.

I saved the best for last. I am surprised that no one talked or mentioned about Obihai. This small gizmo is an adapter that you can use with GV and tons of other VOIP. You will need high speed internet as you are making calls through internet. How this works is, first you get a google number. After that you set up the Obihai settings online. Depending on your Obihai model, you can have wireless setup or LAN cable. The basic model of Obihai has one ethernet port at the back. So the LAN cable will be connected from one of the ports of your router to the back of Obihai and this will be the connection to the internet for the gizmo. Then you connect a phone via telephone line from the back of Obihai to a telephone set. You can connect a regular telephone set or a cordless set to Obihai and either will work.

Now you have VOIP setup and you can give your GV number out to anyone. Also, you can receive calls on your telephone set. Your only cost is the one time purchase for Obihai and no recurring charges like MJ, Nettalk etc. All calls are free. This is the best device and most efficient way of making calls. The voice quality is flawless compared to other VOIP and people will not even notice that you are talking through the internet. Obihai uses their proprietary way of compressing data and prioritizes voice over other traffic so there is no latency and excellent voice quality.

No. When you forward your calls, people call your number and then the call is forwarded to your other line. When your service is suspended even temporarily, you do not get that service.

Apparently, google's rolled out an app called "hangouts dialer" that's affiliated with google hangouts that allows you to make free calls to the US and Canada for free.

I havent tried out that yet. I am happy and content with Obihai-Google voice setup. You could make calls through browser using "hangout" but your computer will have to be on all the time. Probably you could also use their app on your cell phone but then that uses data/wifi. Again, at least 3G or high speed internet is needed for voice communication. Let us know if you try it.

I already made calls using "hangouts dialer" app (wifi). Call quality was pretty decent.
